According to Statistica, in 2016 there were 565 million people living in North America. In 2020 it grew to more than 601 million. The life expectancy in 2020 for females in the US is 81 years and 84 years in Canada. For males US is 76 in Canada 81. Clearly, we are living longer, with women surpassing men by 5+ years. COVID has redefined home and created new standards by which we live, work and play today. So how do we design a livable environment that adapt to a person’s lifestyle as it changes over time? As professionals in design, architecture, construction, and renovation industries, including providers of products and services, we need to know and understand what design application will fit the client’s needs today and how the livable environment can be designed to adapt over time, allowing the client to gracefully age in place.

Learning Objectives:
• To Identify the demographics & characteristics of the population in North America
• To understand the psychology of “Place”
• To identify the five Design Categories and their features & functions
• To identify the role technology plays in creating safe environments.
